John Reeves Pope

Mr. John Reeves Pope, 98, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday April 25, 2009 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Pope was born in Forsyth County to the late Charles Tildon and Sally Jones Pope on November 20, 1910. Mr. Pope attended Weaver College in Kansas City, KS. Where he concentrated in speech and debate. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church since 1958 where he served as a Lay leader, Chairman of the Official Board, and Chairman of the Building Committee. Mr. Pope was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII in the Lucian Islands. He was the manager of GAB, General Adjustment Bureau, retiring after 25 years of service. Mr. Pope enjoyed gardening in his spare time and was known for his prize winning watermelons which he enjoyed giving away. Mr. Pope was also the Commander of the American Legion for two terms. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Virginia Winfree Pope; three brothers, and two sisters. Mr. Pope is survived by a daughter Sandra Pope Brown and husband Brandon of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Ginny Brown of Greensboro and Kim Brown Campbell and husband Dr. Duncan Campbell of Montana; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Bret Cogan officiating. Entombment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends an hour and a half prior to the service at the funeral home.
