John Pegram

John “Johnny” Howard Pegram, known as “Papa” and “Papa Pig”, died peacefully in his home early on October 2, 2022. Johnny was born on December 25, 1937, to Howard Maxwell Pegram and Cora Lee Tucker Pegram and grew up in Oak Ridge, NC. He and his wife, Stacey Maxine Bennett, also of Oak Ridge, had been married for 67 years.  Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Kathy Sue Pegram, daughter Dolores Jean Higgins, who passed away earlier this year, sisters Margaret Faye Oldrook, Wanda Kay Pegram and brothers Donald Ray Pegram, and Kenneth Wayne Pegram.  He was the oldest living Pegram male.

Johnny is succeeded in death by sisters Peggy Nance Pegram Twiddy, Shirley Pegram Pearson, and brother Horace “Micky” Dale Pegram, wife Maxine Pegram, daughter Stacy Inez Pegram Gregory, son, John “Bucky” Howard Pegram Jr (Tina), and nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren

Johnny grew up working on his family farm.  He married Maxine on June 24, 1954. Johnny worked at Guilford Mills and he and his wife and children raised tobacco until the 1980’s. Known for his hard work, he worked taking care of golf courses in the area until retiring completely, due to health reasons, at the age of 82.

Johnny and his family were active members of Northwest Baptist Church.

Papa will be remembered for his love of fishing and football.  He also loved golf and hunting. He often took overnight fishing trips with friends and relatives, especially his grandsons, to the NC and VA coast for saltwater fishing.  Football was always on his TV during the season, and he loved the New England Patriots.  He will be remembered for his humor, his stories, and his love for his family- especially his grandchildren.  Papa loved babies and watching the little grandkids play.

Johnny desired no formal funeral services, but family and friends will gather in the fellowship hall at Northwest Baptist Church (3605 Edgefield Rd, Greensboro, NC 27409) to honor and remember him on Saturday, October 15th at 2pm. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
