John Emory Newman

WINSTON-SALEM-Mr. John Emory Newman, 70, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Newman was born on February 28, 1943 in Halifax County, NC to Emory Erskin Newman and Maxine Gardner Newman. He was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. John had a long and successful retail management career beginning with Rose's Store. Following his time with Rose's, he went on to be a co-owner and manager of a Ben Franklin's Store franchise. Preceding Mr. Newman in death are his parents and three uncles, John, Wayne, and Will Alston. Mr. Newman is survived by his wife, Bessie White Newman of the home; three sisters, Sue Presson (Phil) of Seaford, VA, Luanne Phillips (Ivan) of Williamsburg, VA and Candace Morgan (Bobby Allen) of Williamsburg, VA; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; many close and loving long-time friends and caring neighbors. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with Dr. Stephen Martin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1130 Jonestown Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
