John Allan Koivisto was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on March 19, 1944, to Elmer John and Virginia Dormer Koivisto. He attended Duluth East High School and received a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Minnesota.
He enlisted in the Air Force for officer training and was sent to the University of Utah for training as an Air Force Meteorologist, and spent 3 ½ years forecasting weather for a North American Air Defense Command Control Center.
After leaving the Air Force, he went to work for the Veterans Administration, starting in Detroit, Michigan. He came to work at the VA Regional Office in Winston-Salem in 1979 where he held several positions and retired as the Loan Guaranty Officer.
He was very active with, and served as president of, the Winston-Salem chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. He had many interests including photography, history, astronomy, and he was a long-time baseball coach at Northwest Forsyth Little League.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Timothy Edward Koivisto. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Susan Green Koivisto, his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Amy Fraysier Koivisto, his grandsons, Lucas and Owen Koivisto, and his granddaughter, Ava Koivisto. He is also survived by his brother in-law, Richard Green, and sister-in-law, Adeline Nunez, his niece, Adeline Grams, and nephew, Carl Green, and two special cousins, Bruce Grevall and Frank Bolos.

A private service will be held for family and close friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Trellis Supportive Care, the Forsyth Humane Society, or Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation (AARF).
