John Walker

On December 1, 2022, John Kennison Walker died in Winston-Salem, NC. He was 72 years old.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Joanne W. Walker; his two children, John Kennison Walker II and Jennifer Susanne Walker; brother Stephen M. Walker and wife Brenda; sister Kathryn L. Walker; sister Judith W. Wilson and husband, Larry; brother Christopher C. Walker and wife Patricia; and a large and loving extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack G. and Jayne Walker, of Winston-Salem.

John Walker was born in Ronceverte, West Virginia, and loved to share stories of the family farm and the aunts, uncles, cousins, and generations that came before. The family moved to Winston-Salem when John was in middle school. A dedicated Boy Scout throughout his teenage years, John achieved his Eagle Scout rank while a student at West Forsyth High School. He raised his family in Fayetteville, NC, and after retirement returned to Winston-Salem with his wife, Joanne, to enjoy the company of his parents at the end of their life.

After serving with the NC State Bureau of Investigation for several years, John had a long and successful career as a Special Agent in the Criminal Investigation Division of the U.S. Treasury Department. The care and regard he showed to all people garnered respect not only from colleagues, but also from many of those he investigated. Ever kind, calm, and with an uncanny attention to detail, he served his post with integrity.

John was always learning and had a multitude of hobbies over the course of his life, but his favorite interests were always those that he could do with his family. Sailing was a longtime passion, and many happy family memories were made on his boat, the Sea Walker. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and uncle, and will be deeply missed by all even as we carry on his enduring love and gentle spirit.

A memorial service for remembrance and celebration for John Walker will be held on December 16th at 2:00pm at the Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Doug Klein officiating. Visitation will occur prior to the memorial service at 1:00pm and the committal will follow the memorial service at the columbarium at Salem Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Trellis Supportive Care and the Parkinson Disease Foundation.
