Mr. John Robert Hewitt, 74, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 1, 1935 in Newton, N.C. to Lucille L. and Robert W. Hewitt. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Jennifer Anne Hewitt. He is survived by his wife, Connie Williams Hewitt, of the home; a daughter, Johnna Raye Hewitt; a son, R. Andrew Hewitt and wife, Carol; a granddaughter, Drew Taylor Hewitt; a grandson, Joshua Hewitt; and Camilla Hewitt former wife and lifelong friend, all of Bermuda Run. Also surviving is his stepson, Bobby Fail, wife Meghan and children, Brody and Zachary of Villa Rica, GA; a brother, Dick Hewitt of Newton; a sister, Susan Harris of Hickory; two nieces and two nephews. A typical young boy of his time ""Johnny"" was a Boy Scout, had a neighborhood paper route, mowed lawns and loved his dog Skipper. As a teen he played high school football, drove an old chevy jalopy and hung out at the local youth center. After graduation from Newton-Conover High School, he served in Korea with the U.S. Army. In 1961 John earned his B.A. Degree from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory and went on to work for Dillard Paper Company until 1972. He then established and ran Wonder Packaging Company in Winston-Salem until 1979. After selling this business, he became a realtor and land developer. At the time of his death John was owner and manager of two locations of Hewitt Business Center. He was active in many civic organizations including the Jaycees and Kiwanis Club. John was a deacon and member of College Park Baptist Church for over 35 years and in mid 1970 was instrumental in establishing Boy Scout Troop #907 that is still active today. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at College Park Baptist Church with Rev. Ramon Smith and Rev. T. F. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel.In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Jenni's Walk of Hope, 3565 Spangenberg Ave., Clemmons, N.C. 27012.
