John McDowell Fultz, Sr. of Advance, NC, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2008 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Born June 8, l9l9 in Dinwiddie Count,Va., he was the son of the late Dr. George Simeon Fultz and Alma McDowell Fultz. John graduated from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia with a degree in chemistry at age 19 and did graduate work at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. John's career centered in the fields of research and product development with a focus on advancements in packaging. He worked for Reynolds Aluminum in Richmond, Virginia, and then became Vice President of Research and Product Development at Archer Products, a division of RJR, in Winston-Salem. John retired from Kraft Foods in Chicago as Director of Research and Development. He is survived by his wife, Louise Doyle Fultz; two sons, John Fultz, Jr. and wife Judy of Evanston, Ill; Leigh Fultz and wife Betty of Lewisville, NC; and one daughter, Susan Fultz Kolodny and husband Joel of Louisville, Colo; six grandchildren, Kristin Fultz of Northbrook, Ill; Jay Fultz and wife Stephanie of Alexandria, Va; Evan Fultz and wife Lisa of Raleigh; Tyler Cunningham and husband Michael of Raleigh; Ali Finnegan and husband Brendan of Broomfield, Colo.; Lisa Boes and husband John of Denver, Colo; Also surviving are seven great grandchildren: Troy and Trent Finnegan of Broomfield, Colo.; Corinna, Reid and Meredith Fultz of Raleigh; Davis Cunningham of Raleigh; and Jessica Fultz of Alexandria,Va. He is preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. John and his beloved wife Louise celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on November 25, 2008. Devoted to his family, he took great pride in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He treasured his ties to his nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends. A loyal fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies, he was proud to have attended his 70th college reunion of the Class of 1938 in May, 2008. A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, February 28, at 2:00 pm in the Living Room at Bermuda Village, Advance, NC. A reception will follow the service.
