John Joseph "Johnny" Cates

Mr. John Joseph ""Johnny"" Cates, 70, passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, April 21, 2014. He was born in Forsyth Co. on September 20, 1943 the son of the late Howard Anderson Cates, Sr. and Nellie Juanita Cranfill Cates. Johnny was a loving husband, father, ""Poppy"", brother and friend who will be missed deeply by all who knew him. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was retired from Rexam Beverage Container with 37 years of service. He proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Johnny loved old cars and street rods. He and his family traveled to many area car shows with his 1941 Chevy. Johnny is survived by his wife, Sue M. Cates of the home, a daughter, Johanna Cates of Tobaccoville, a grandson, John Matthew Cates, two sisters, Helen Tuttle Brewer (Bruce) of Rural Hall and Kathy Cates Jessup (Brent) of Pendelton, SC, a brother, H.A. Cates, Jr. (Betty) of Tobaccoville. He is also survived by a special family friend, Darlene Farmer and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Macedonia Baptist Church in Tobaccoville with Jerry Simpkins, Minister and Pastor Jeff Hamrick officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 this evening Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. Box 351, Tobaccoville, NC 27050 or Mountain Valley Hospice, 129 Veterans Dr., Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The family would like to thank Mountain Valley Hospice for all the loving care and support that was shown during Johnny's need. They would especially like to thank Shey Dobson and Tracie Cheek for everything that they did for Johnny and the family.
