John Raymond Broyles Jr., an author, minister, and builder, passed away in his sleep at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, North Carolina early Monday morning, on September 5, 2022.
John was a tireless servant of God. He served as an associate missionary in Turkey and the assistant pastor of United, the Pentecostal Church of Spring Lake, NC. John was a big believer in helping at church however he could, so he taught Sunday School, shoveled snow, taught Bible studies, preached sermons, baptized people, and sold innumerable boxes of Krispy Kreme doughnuts on Saturdays or hot dogs and sodas after church Sunday night for church fundraisers. He was an outreach director, youth leader, church administrator, and rest home minister. He helped build a church fellowship hall and a parsonage, he built altars for his friends, and he did many church repairs. He was a worship leader, choir director, soloist, and musician. He played the piano, organ, accordion, tuba, trombone, trumpet, and guitar in church services. He could always be counted on to get a home run at church softball games, and he played ping pong quite well too.
John loved to read, especially the Bible, biographies, and Louis L’Amour books. He also loved to write and wrote seven nonfiction books about Bible concepts and personal testimonies. He nearly finished a bachelor’s degree in Botany and served one term in Vietnam in the U.S. Army.
John built two of his own houses and worked on many others. He gave huge discounts to all his customers. In his mind, he could always find a reason why someone deserved the lowest price he could manage, which often meant a sacrifice for his own budget.
John was a prayer warrior. He often spent hours a day in prayer and Bible reading. His conversations always seemed to include God because his life always included God. In his most popular book, “Find God’s Purpose for Your Life,” John wrote, “We must be able to (1) successfully accomplish our life’s purpose, (2) while constantly being alert and prepared to help others on their own quests, yet (3) never lose sight of the fact that everything we say and do in this life must be balanced against our own mortality and our hope of eternal life.” He believed it, and so he lived it.
John is survived by his wife of 22 years, Lucrecia (Carmen) Linder Broyles; his children and stepchildren, John Broyles III, Charlotte Broyles Wholters, Pastor Harold Linder, and Pastor Robert Linder; and his grandchildren and stepgrandchildren, Camilla Wholters Alexander, Joshua Wholters, Jonathan Broyles, Grace Wholters, Benjamin Broyles, Emalie Linder, Abby Linder, and Harrison Linder. He is also survived by his siblings, Jill Broyles Friedman and Michael Broyles. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marjorie Broyles; and his sister, Marjorie Kinnee.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at 12:00 noon, at Heavenview United Pentecostal Church with Pastor Harold Linder officiating. A visitation will be held one-hour prior, from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the church. A private family graveside will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at Salisbury National Cemetery.
