John David Baity

Mr. John David Baity, Sr., 89, took his last breath on Earth and his next breath in Heaven on Saturday, July 27, 2024.

Mr. Baity was born February 15, 1935, to the late Herman David Baity and Sallie Bet Wooten Baity. He graduated from James A. Gray High School in 1953 and worked at Reynolds Park as a train engineer. Later, he became Chief Repairman at RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company and retired while at Whitaker Park after working for 34 years.

He attended Memorial United Church of Christ where he met the love of his life, Cleo George. In 1966, he moved his family to the Village of Clemmons where he remained a lifelong resident.

In 1974, Mr. Baity joined the Clemmons Volunteer Fire Department, where he would continue serving for 50 years. The Clemmons Fire Department became his passion. He served as an advisor for the Explorer Post, served on the Board, and was Captain of Traffic Control. He continued working in the department until he was 87 when his health didn't allow him to go to fire events. Mr. Baity received much joy from serving the Clemmons Community in this capacity.

He was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir for many years.

Mr. Baity's life was richly blessed with good health, many laughs, memories of vacations and family gatherings, wonderful neighbors and friends, loved gardening and had a life of following our Lord and Savior.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his forever love, Mary Cleo George Baity. He and his wife raised three wonderful children who survive him, David (Eileen) Baity, Susan (Ira) Galloway, and Steven (Beth) Baity; six grandchildren, Zach Horton, Bryan Horton, Jennifer Baity Chaffin, Nicholas (Nick) Baity, Travis Baity, and Katelyn Baity; and 4 great grandchildren, Madeline Horton, Chase Horton, Palmer Chaffin, and Baker Horton.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 1:00PM at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. John Fitzgerald officiating. The family will receive friends an hour and a half prior to the service, from 11:30AM- 1:00PM, at the church. Burial will immediately follow the service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.

An additional visitation will be held the evening of Tuesday, July 30, 2024 and again the evening of Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the home of Steven and Beth Baity.
