Mr. John Wesley Athan, Jr., 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away on January 25, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Athan, Jr. was born on March 9, 1922 in Forsyth County to the late John W. Athan, Sr. and wife Bertha Laymen Athan. After high school John served his country in the United States Marine Corps where he fought in World War II in the South Pacific. John was involved in woodworking growing up and throughout the majority of his life. He worked for Piedmont Airlines and USAir where he installed the interior of airplanes. In his retirement years, Mr. Athan enjoyed gardening, and in particular, growing tomatoes. Preceding him in death along with his parents were three sisters, Martha Hutchins, Lucille Wishon, and Janet Whiteheart; two brothers, Herbert Athan and Wayne Athan. Surviving Mr. Athan, Jr. are his loving wife of 60 years, Doris Athan and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bill Allen and the Rev. Charlie Belch officiating. Burial will follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, January 29, 2011.
