SOUTHERN - WINSTON-SALEM Mr. Joel Delano Southern, age 78, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born July 1, 1933 in Forsyth County to the late Joel Francis Southern and Beulah Lakey Howerton Southern. Mr. Southern proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany during that time. He worked at McLean Trucking Company and retired from Stroh Brewery. In addition to his parents, Mr. Southern was preceded in death by a special granddaughter, Heather Dunn; and three brothers, Dallas Lee Southern, Jim Southern and Bill Howerton. Surviving are his wife, Polly Plaster Southern; three daughters, Beth Southern and husband, Kim Wolfington, Kristi Bowen and Marty Southern; four grandchildren, Matthew Dunn (Jessica), Kristin Jones, Katelyn Longworth and Kane Bowen; six great-grandchildren, Destiny Bates, Blake Loy, Cameron Pack, Piper Dunn, Paxton Dunn and Delilah Meredith; two sisters, Mary Surratt (Tom) and Esther Stith (Julian); and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with Mr. Dan Donathan officiating.
