Joe Jody Oscar Shipley, Jr.

WALKERTOWN-Joe ""Jody"" Oscar Shipley, Jr., 51, a loving husband, a devoted dad, a caring baseball coach, umpire, and a genuine friend, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 3, 1958 in Forsyth Co. to the late Joe Oscar Shipley, Sr. and Helen Lawson Shipley. Jody was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Walkertown Little League, Walkertown Civic Club, and Twin City Umpire Association. He retired from the City of Winston Salem after 32 years of dedicated service. Jody loved baseball and racing. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, William Dale Shipley and a sister, JoAnn Shipley. Surviving are his wife, Joyce Martin Shipley of the home; two sons, Joshua and Jordan Shipley; five brothers, Ken Shipley and wife Mary Ella of Supply, Robert Shipley and wife Robin of Kernersville, Glen Shipley and wife Renee of Winston Salem, Sammy Shipley of Walkertown, and Todd Shipley of Stokesdale; one sister, Eve Jane Tester of Bristol, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Friday, September 25, 2009 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Belews Creek with the Rev. Barry Clement officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Thursday, September 24, 2009 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel and at other times at the home of Ronnie and Michelle Clifton, 4770 Clifton Farm Rd., Walkertown.
