Joanne Cox Hamlet

Mrs. Joanne Cox Hamlet, 93, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2025, at her home surrounded by her children, Lisa and Stephen. Mrs. Hamlet was born on January 1, 1932, in Rockingham County, to the late Mr. James M. Cox and Mrs. Elsie Mabe Cox. 

Joanne was a faithful and active member of Ardmore United Methodist Church where she was in many groups such as their Grief Share Support Group, Young at Heart, and United Methodist Women. She was born and raised in Reidsville, NC, and attended Reidsville High School where she met her husband, Stephen Hamlet, Jr. and graduated in 1950. After high school, Joanne went on to attend the Women’s College which is now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. 

She worked for the Dean of Women at UNC Chapel Hill. Shortly thereafter, she and her husband had three children. In 1969, Joanne and her family moved to Winston-Salem, NC, where she resided for the remainder of her time. Joanne truly adored her family and was always active in their lives. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends, many she had known for much of her life. She loved spending time on her patio with her flowers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in passing by her husband, Stephen B. Hamlet Jr.; her daughter, Beth Leonard; granddaughter, Amy Leonard; and grandson, Jon Leonard. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lisa Rodgers (Greg); son, Stephen Hamlet III (Keven); five grandchildren, Sam, Matt, Adam (Halie), Ashley, and Stephen IV; and her sister, Shirley Medley. 

A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 1:00pm at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Rev. Kelly Carpenter and Mary Jo Brewer officiating. There will be a visitation beginning at 12:30pm prior to the service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
