Joan Rutherford Wood

Joan Rutherford Wood, 79, passed away on March 4, 2012, after a period of declining health. She was born on March 6, 1932 to the late M. Haynes and Vera Berry Rutherford of Valdese, NC. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Lanier Wood, Jr.; a son, James R. Davis, Jr. and wife, Dawn of Lewisville, NC; daughters, Kathlyn H. Davis of Winston-Salem, NC and Susan D. Ballentine and husband, Keith of Rocky Mount, NC; a sister, Gail R. Harding and husband, Ray of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; grandchildren, Meredith Roels, and husband, Kevin, of Winston-Salem, NC; W. Keith Ballentine, III and McCall Ballentine of Chapel Hill, NC.; great-grandchildren, Joseph and Landon Roels of Winston-Salem, NC. She was predeceased by her parents, and son, Stephen Haynes Davis. Joan grew up in Valdese, NC, graduating from Valdese High School and then attending Salem College. Shortly after marrying, Joan moved to Winston-Salem where she raised her family. She spent many years working as an assistant in the medical field, retiring from the Department of Neurosurgery at Bowman Gray in 1997. She was a long standing member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a devoted mother and grandmother. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem, NC on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. A Service to celebrate Joan's life will be held at the Waldensian Presbyterian Church in Valdese, NC on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 11:00 am. Flowers are welcome or memorial gifts may be made to the Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103-5766, or to Clemmons Village Activity Fund, 6401 Holder Road, Clemmons, NC 27012.
