Joan Marriott Orchard

Mrs. Joan Marriott Orchard of Winston-Salem, NC died Sunday, August 23, 2009 at Springwood Care Center. Joan was born in London, England on January 5, 1916 to Alfred John Marriott and Ellen Catherine Marriott. The family lived many wonderful years in Brighton, England. Joan worked with the American Red Cross in England during World War II, while her husband Bernard Joseph Orchard served as a Lieutenant with the British Army on Normandy. Joan and her husband immigrated to America and settled in Winston-Salem, NC in 1954. Joan accepted a position of stenographer with Wachovia Bank. She retired from Wachovia as an Assistant Vice President. Joan was preceded in death by her husband Bernard Orchard. She is survived by her brother, Peter Marriott of Thatchem Newberry, Berkshire, England; adopted daughters, Linda Orchard of Hamptonville, NC and Reba Sexton and husband Curtis Sexton of Lexington, NC; four grandchildren, James Coley of Hamptonville, NC, Julie Aguado and husband Robert Robert of Ranson, W. VA, Alicia Williams and husband Michael of South Carolina and Brandon Sexton of Mocksville, NC; two great-grandchildren Calek Aguado and Mason Williams. Joan was a dear sister-in-law to Kenneth Charles Whapham and wife Anne, a beloved Aunt to Kenneth Clay Whapham and wife Joni, and Phillip Charles Whapham and wife Vicki. She was a beloved great Aunt to Brianne Whapham, Brent Whapham, Justine Whapham, and Lauren Whapham. Joan touched her many, dear, life long friends and everyone that she came in contact with. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Brad Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
