Joan Lea Gillman Frewen

Mrs. Joan Lea Gillman Frewen passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, October 29, 2009 with her daughter by her side. Preceding her in death was her devoted husband of 60 years, William Thomas Frewen. She is survived by her loving daughter, Carroll Frewen Ledford. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Bridge (Pfafftown); nieces and nephews, Jean Bridge Craig (Winston-Salem), Chris Bridge (Winston-Salem), Kitty and Al DeMaria (Wilmington), Mary Anne and Johnny Merritt (Pfafftown) and Joe and Laura Bridge (Winston-Salem). Joan was born to Alfred Ray and Leathie Gillman in Galveston, Texas on October 24, 1927 and traveled the world with her husband and daughter prior to settling in Winston-Salem for the past 25 years. She was a wife, mother and homemaker who loved cooking, was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed reading. She was a member of Crews United Methodist Church where she served as Teacher for the Christian Fellowship Sunday-School Class. It was through Crews that Linda and Bill Sink and H. W. and Margie Marion came into her life. Their inexhaustible care and love have been a blessing to Joan and Carroll, most especially during her long illness. In addition to the congregation of Crews UMC, whom she and Carroll fondly referred to as their ""second family"", Carroll would like to express deepest gratitude for their love and concern to special friends, Bonnie Dudley (Winston-Salem), Steve Flynn (Winston-Salem), Ken Campbell (King), Bobbi Mason (Clemmons), Richard and Melissa Smith (Walkertown) and Larry Mackie (Winston-Salem). Thank you to the caring staff at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Baptist Hospital and especially to Dr. William Petty, Oncology and to Dr. John Hoyle, Cardiology and to the staff of Hospice. Graveside Services will be held at Crews United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4150 Reidsville Road, Winston-Salem at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2009. In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Hall Fund at Crews United Methodist Church in her memory. Mother, you made my world beautiful and secure. You were always my best friend. I will miss you terribly but you will forever be in my heart. I love you.
