Jo Ann Elizabeth Holcomb Phelps

Mrs. Jo Ann Elizabeth Holcomb Phelps, 79, of Winston-Salem passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center surrounded by her family. Jo Ann was born on November 14, 1932 in Forsyth County to Albert Howard, Sr. and Annie Laurie Conrad Holcomb. Jo Ann graduated from South Fork High School and worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for ten years. Jo Ann married Herman ""Fuzzy"" Phelps on April 29, 1962. She was a wonderful and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. Jo Ann helped care for her siblings at a young age and continued to care for all of us throughout her life as long as she was able. Jo Ann was very family centered and took special care to be thankful for all people and all things dear to her. Even in her final days Jo Ann found the strength to ask about her family and to make sure Fuzzy was okay. Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Frances Gough; beloved sisters-in-law, Jeanne Holcomb and Lavelle Phelps Whicker. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Herman; daughter, Peggy (Jeff) Crater; granddaughters, Emily and Elizabeth; brother, Howard Holcomb and fiancé Barbara; sister, Gay (John) Briggs. She is also survived by nephews, Steve, Randy (Dana), Jimmy (Sara), and Tim (Karen) Whicker; Chad (Linda) Gough, Tony (Claudia) Gough, Richard (Fred) Holcomb, and Matt Briggs; her only niece, Laurie Briggs (Beau) Le Roux; in addition to numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Sharon United Methodist Church with Rev. Greg Freeman officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Sharon United Methodist Church, 5330 Sharon Church Rd., Lewisville, NC 27023.
