WALKERTOWN – Jimmy E. Garland, 86, passed away Monday, July 10, 2023 surrounded by his family after a period of declining health. Jimmy was born on November 16, 1936 in Haywood County to Cecil Conrad Garland and Margaret Beasley Garland. He was employed by Hanes Hosiery / Sara Lee for 45 years at the Weeks Division. He also owned and operated 66 motors in Walkertown for 45 years.
Jimmy thoroughly enjoyed the used car business and all that went along with it, including his many friends that stopped in frequently to chat and solve the problems of the world. He loved gardening and was known for his many years of harvesting vegetables, especially tomatoes that he enjoyed giving away to friends and family. He was also happy when he could return to his roots where he was raised in the Great Smoky Mountains of NC to visit with family and friends as often as he could.
Jimmy was a good and simple man with a heart of gold, a “jack of all trades” and would go out of his way to assist anyone in need of his help.
In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Peggy W. Garland; two sisters, Julia O’Neal Allen and Ann Garland; half brothers, Cecil Garland Jr., William Garland, and Tom Garland; a half sister, Kathleen Harrison; and a special nephew, Jim Gribble.
Surviving are his son, Gary Garland (wife, Deborah) of Walkertown; special nieces and nephews, Sara Hayes (Tom), Tim Gribble (Jan), and William “Billy” Gribble (Cindy); a great nephew, Tim Gribble (Jessy) and their children, Aurora and Phoenix; as well as several other nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with Pastor Gary Styers officiating. There will be no formal visitation with the family present, however Jimmy will be available for viewing on Friday, July 14, at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel during regular business hours.
The family would like to thank the staffs of both Bermuda Village Skilled Nursing and Trellis Supportive Care for their care and support during Jimmy’s illness, as well as Pastor Gary Styers for his many visits and chats. They would also like to thank Dr. Tim Darnell, Dr. Reg Fowler, and Dr. Denise Laurienti for their many years of excellent care for Jimmy.
