Jimmy Cox

Mr. Jimmy Ray Cox, 82, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born February 27,1939 in Surry County to the late Rhoten Garfield Cox and Mabel Easter Cox. He was a member of the 1957 graduating class of Mt. Airy High School. Jimmy loved to attend his high school reunions with all of his classmates. He also attended Lee McRae College. In addition to his parents, Jimmy is preceded in death by his son, Steve Cox; five brothers, Jack, Ted, Jake, Paul, and Mike; infant sister Mary Margaret; and brother-in-law, Ronnie Simpson. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Gail Bondurant Cox; one son, William “Billy or Bill” Cox; a brother, Dennis Cox (Brenda); a sister, Sarah Cox Simpson; a special nephew, Jackie Cox (Shelia); special niece Dawn Lawson (Lee); and special uncle, Perry Easter. In addition, surviving sisters-in-laws Shelby Cox, Carin Cox; brother-in-law Robert Bondurant (Penny), and a sister-in-law Neina Bondurant Withers who was always available to help with anything and to make Jimmy laugh. She is a very special much-loved sister and my right arm. The family has lived in the same house for fifty plus years. Two special neighbors that he dearly loved were Doris and Lloyd who were our across-the-fence neighbors and Darrell who was our across-the-road neighbor. Jimmy and Darrell got together and shared a glass of wine every day. When Darrell passed, Jimmy was heartbroken. During the past few years, our neighbor Doug did all the work at our house that Jimmy was no longer able to do. He made it possible for us to remain in our home which we could not have done without him. For fifty plus years Jimmy and Gail have been blessed with a group of friends (you know who you are) who have been by their side through the happy times and sad times. They have been so supportive through out Jimmy’s long illness and death. He was always buying and selling old cars (Mopars) and spent many happy hours at his brother, Dennis’ service station working on those cars (with a lot of help from Dennis. He also enjoyed making wine and sharing it with all of his friends. He dearly loved his only sister Sarah. She has cut his hair for fifty years and came to the house when he was no longer able to come to her shop. Jimmy worked in sales with Renn Enterprise for several years. During that time, he and Gail made great friends and traveled with them all over the U.S. and many foreign countries. The family has been members at Bethany Baptist Church for many years. Jimmy really loved his men’s Sunday school class. The church has been a great support system for us. We would like to thank Dr. Frances O’Brien for the many years he served as Jimmy’s primary care physician. They became close friends even though Jimmy did not always listen to Dr. O’Brien’s advice. After his last hospitalization, Jimmy chose Trellis (Hospice) for his home care. Thank God he did because his caregivers were “angels” especially Angie and Charity. Because of their excellent care, he was able to spend his final six months at home which is exactly what he wanted. When he was admitted to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, he found more “angels” who made sure he was comfortable as they provided excellent care. On November 2, Jimmy joined his son Steve and the entire Cox family who had gone before him. What a reunion that was! As Jimmy requested, he will be cremated and placed beside his son, Steve at Crestview. At this time, there are no formal services planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC, 27103.
