Jewell Smith Lankford

KERNERSVILLE-Jewell Smith Lankford, 86, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 12, 2010 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 13, 1923 in Forsyth Co. to the late Bunyan Dewitt and Hattie Weavil Smith. Born and raised in Forsyth Co., Jewell attended Sedge Garden High School, graduating class of 1940. She retired from Forsyth Co. School System after 30+ years of service; and then spent her time spoiling her grandchildren, traveling, and visiting with family and friends. Jewell was a faithful member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church in Kernersville for more than 65 years. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her spouses, Lewis F. Neal and Jesse R. Lankford; and three brothers, Earl D. Smith, Wade W. Smith and Roger L. Smith. Surviving are her son, Steven M. Neal and wife, Angela of Gastonia; her daughter, Lisa N. Chandler and husband, Mark of Winston Salem; two granddaughters, Kristin E. Neal of Cary, Kimberly D. Neal of Goldsboro; and one brother, Royce B. Smith of Kernersville. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church with Rev. Patricia Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to either, Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, 794 Sedge Garden Rd., Kernersville, NC 27284, or Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103. The family acknowledges with grateful appreciation the love and care given by friends and family throughout mom's lifetime, especially her niece, Carol Debusk.
