Jewel Madewell Steward

GREENSBORO-Jewel Madewell Steward, 89, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Blumenthal's Jewish Nursing Home. She was born March 13, 1920 in Putnam Co. TN to the late John T. and Hattie Welch Madewell. Jewel was a member of Walkertown Baptist Church and a current member at Friendly Ave. Baptist Church. She retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco after 24 years of employment. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Detro Steward, Sr.; a son, James Ray Steward; nine brothers and sisters. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Blanton and husband John of Greensboro, Dorothy Cranfill and husband Fred of Kernersville; a son, Herman D. Steward, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Fort Mill, SC; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 1 step-granddaughter; and 1 step-great-granddaughter. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Matt Queen officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:30 pm in the church fellowship hall prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Friendly Ave. Baptist Church Building Fund, 4800 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Blumenthal's Jewish Nursing Home for the loving care that was given to Jewel.
