Jeanette Brown Surface

Mrs. Jeanette Brown Surface was called upon by the lord to return home Saturday afternoon, September 28, 2013. She was born in Tazewell County, VA to the proud parents of Eva Mae and Robert Taylor Brown, both deceased. Jeanette met the love of her life, Mr. Kelly Surface (deceased) in 1947 and raised 6 children, numerous grandchildren and countless children related to the family simply through friendships. Jeanette is survived by 2 sons, Larry E. Surface & wife, Angie of Rural Hall, NC, Kelly W. Surface & wife, Becky of Winston-Salem, NC; 2 daughters, Shelvia M. Barry of Winston Salem, NC and Bobbie G Mullies & husband Rex, of Farmington, NC ; 13 grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Thelma Rae Stewart and Beverly Lynn Arnold and her loving husband of 35 years, Kelly Surface. She moved to Winston Salem with her husband and children in 1953; working early in life as a registered nurse and later in the textile industry before retiring from Adams Millis Corporation (Currently known as Hanes brands) as a supervisor in 1991 after 25 years of service. She stayed active in life by participating in soft ball, bowling, trips to the beach and cooking for the family. She was an avid reader and enjoyed nothing better than curling up with a good book prior to bedtime. In reflecting on her life, family, friends and acquaintances saw strength, kindness, courage and independence. She was a guiding light to us all and a blessing from God, which will surely be missed. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway in Winston Salem, NC. 27103. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Gardens of Memory, 5676 Old Walkertown Rd, Walkertown, NC 27051 with the Rev. Roy Williams officiating. Flowers will be received at the funeral home, Hayworth-Miller; memorial donations in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane; Winston Salem, NC. 27103, in Jeanette's memory.
