Jean Snead Belton, 85, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. Jean dedicated her life to family and the service of others. Born to Charlie and Vallie Snead in 1933 and raised on the family farm in Madison, NC, Jean enjoyed a nursing career after receiving her R.N. at City Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. She later became a social worker for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School system where she served the needs of countless students and families over a 30-year career. Jean had many and varied interests over the years from growing flowers for local florists and regional fairs to baking cakes for her husband’s family cafe. She was an avid and talented basketball player while in high school and nursing school. In later years, Jean became an enthusiastic collector and dealer of fine antiques and collectibles. She and husband Bill enjoyed many road trips to visit their daughters while in Texas, Florida, Washington DC and Massachusetts. Despite health challenges in later years, Jean always retained her beautiful smile, warm sociable nature, competitive spirit, and a touch of fun and mischief throughout her life.
Jean was the loving wife of Bill Belton for more than 64 years and devoted mother of daughters Lynn Belton and Robin Hayes. In addition to her husband, daughters and beloved son-in-law Mark Hayes, Jean is survived by her beloved sister Carol Reid of Mayodan, NC, sister-in-law Barbara [Bobbie] Snead of Madison, NC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers Marvin [Bill], Jack, and Leon Snead, and sisters Norma and Margaret Snead.
The family is forever grateful to the staff at Homestead Hills Skilled Nursing and Memory Care for their compassion, kindness and loving care provided to Jean in her final years. In lieu of flowers, please direct any memorial donations to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
