Mrs. Janice ""Jan"" Dawn Smith Freshwater, 63, died Friday, January 1, 2016 after battling cancer for 22 years. She was born February 7, 1952 in Kannapolis, NC to the late Clement ""Sonny"" Smith and Kathleen H. Smith. Jan graduated from UNC Greensboro and retired from Southwest Elementary School in Clemmons with 25 years of teaching. She was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. Jan loved spending time with her family and her dogs. Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Timothy B. Smith; grandparents, Julia and Clement Smith and Mr. and Mrs. John Hinson. Surviving is her husband, Dr. James Freshwater; daughter, Caroline E. ""Carrie"" Freshwater of Winston-Salem; brother, Roger C. Smith and wife, Becky of Graham, NC and a niece, Laurin Smith. A memorial service will be held 6:00 PM Monday, January 4, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. Paula Northrup officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation Northwest NC, 1106 Burke St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
