Mrs. Janet Mather Martel, 92 of Advance, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born November 12, 1932 in Darien, CT to the late Arther N. Mather, and Elsie Katherine (Knorr) Mather. Mrs. Martel was married to Raymond R. Martel for 71 years, and was preceded in death by him when he passed on November 1, 2024. She is survived two daughters, Kathy Southern and Linda Campbell; two sons, Larry Martel and Raymond Martel; 8 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
Married for 71 years, Janet and Ray's life together started in Dover, DE, where Ray was stationed with the AirForce, and soon after, they began to build a family, eventually moving to Bethel, CT to raise their children. Janet prided herself on a spotlessly clean house, making all the meals and school lunches, and kept up with the busy schedules of 4 children in sports and after school events.
Janet also instilled in her children a love for music ensuring that they each learn the basics of piano but allowing them to branch into other instruments as they wished, which also meant more coordination for music lessons. Janet also saw to it that each of her children focused on school and homework, and when needed, she sought out additional supplies or learning aids to help her children so that they could become the best they could be.
Capitalizing on her sewing skills, which didn't stop at clothing, Janet also made everything from complicated pinch pleated curtains, to pillows, and reupholstered several pieces of furniture. She passed along her love of sewing and skills to her daughters and her daughters in law who all are very active seamstresses. After Ray's retirement, Janet and Ray travelled for a year in a motor home throughout much of the country before settling down in NC, where they stayed, except for a twelve year interlude in Ocala, FL living in an over-55 community. While in Florida, Janet along with Ray became an independent contractor for car dealerships helping to transfer cars from one dealership to another.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Trinity Elms Assisted Living 3750 Harper Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. Please denote in Honor/Memory of Janet Martel.
