Mrs. Jan Carol Shive McCombs, age 82, was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior in the early morning of January 27, 2025. She was born on December 18, 1942, to the late Mr. Jay Robinson Shive, Sr. and Mrs. Maude Bost Shive. Jan was married for 58 years to her loving husband, James McCombs.
Jan was born in Charlotte, NC, and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Catawba College. Jan adored children, and she taught early elementary school for a few years before becoming a homemaker to raise her own family and provide care for her grandchildren. Jan had a servant’s heart and was always caring for others. She enjoyed cooking and led a ladies food group for years to provide meals to others. She also enjoyed cross-stitching and had a knack for gardening. Her yard was always beautiful with an abundance of roses and azaleas. Jan was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Leaving behind to cherish her memory is her husband of 58 years, James, and their four children Betsy Bracken, Lori Wade (Bobby), Amy Dixon, and Aaron McCombs (Sheri). Jan’s favorite role was that of a loving mother and doting grandmother, and she adored her seven grandchildren Katy and Zachary Bracken, Emma and Morgan Wade, Faith Dixon, and Brandon (Crystal) and Hunter (Macey) Crews and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Jay (Debbie) Shive, several nieces and nephews, and many friends. In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by a very special aunt and uncle, Carl and Mary Allman.
Jan touched and changed many lives just by knowing her. While we will all miss her contagious smile and laughter, Jan will live on forever in the family she cared for and loved so dearly until we are reunited in our heavenly home. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church at 134 S. Peace Haven Road in Winston Salem, NC. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorials be made to support the Alzheimer’s Association so that research can continue until a cure is found or to Calvary Baptist Church in Winston Salem as they have been a great support to Jan over the years.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Trinity Elms and Home Instead. We placed our precious Jan in your hands to care for her during the last years of her life. The family also offers their thanks for the many prayers offered over the years for Jan.
Proverbs 31:31- Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gates.
Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family of Mrs. McCombs.
