Mr. James ""Jim"" Elbert Whitehurst, Jr., of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Whitehurst was born in Pitt County on September 3, 1949 to the late James Elbert and Juanita Horner Whitehurst. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School, then attended and graduated from Winston-Salem State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Mr. Whitehurst was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, where he was an active member participating in numerous church activities. He will be remembered for his caring, passionate, dedicated personality. He enjoyed volunteering at the Soup Kitchen and Hospice, both of which he was a very active volunteer. Mr. Whitehurst is survived by two brothers, Alton Lee Whitehurst and wife Vivien of California and Kim Tyler Whitehurst and wife Karen of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Ida Kathy Burrow of Midway and Tina Elizabeth Nash of Winston-Salem; nephews, Lee Whitehurst and wife Brandi of California, Jason Burrow and friend Savannah , Jon Burrow and wife Valerie, Samuel Whitehurst and Stephen Whitehurst; nieces, Danielle Nash, Sheila Whitehurst, Shannon Whitehurst, Suzanne Whitehurst, and Sarah Whitehurst and her fiance Jimmy; a great niece Amelia; and a great nephew Nate. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Sunday, October 25, 2009 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4780 Westchester Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, with Bishop Richard Green and Bishop Greg Scott officiating. A military graveside service will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
