James T. Whitehead, 76, lost his fight against cancer on February 18, 2018 in his home with family by his side. James was born on March 20, 1941 in Athens, Georgia to Hugh and Elsie Whitehead. He is survived by his sister, Doris Wiles; his wife, Sharon Whitehead; son, Daniel; stepdaughters, Kathy Reid (Stu); Donna Sumner (Carla) and granddaughter, Brittany Reid. James' family moved to Winston-Salem, NC and James never left. He graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1959 and still maintained close friendships from those early years. James retired from Stroh's Brewery after 25 years of service. Retirement was met head on with travel and enjoying his family and friends. James was a good man, a loving husband and father, a man with a big heart. His love for animals was well known, and the birds, squirrels, feral cats and all the woodland creatures will miss him dearly. The family would like to thank Hospice and especially his stepdaughter-in-law, Carla Korch, whose care and willingness to move from Atlanta allowed James to spend his last days at home with his wife and kitty cats, Sophie and Buddy. He was able to spend time with his son and friends in his home where he was most comfortable. Cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be held at a later date.
