Winston-Salem - Mr. James Whaley, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully at his home on March 7th, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 24th, 1929 in Shellman, Georgia, to the late Ross and Sarah Whaley. Mr. Whaley was a veteran of the US Army, serving in both the Korean Theater and the Vietnam Conflict. During this time he was awarded two Bronze stars and a Silver star for his bravery in combat. After his active combat duties, he was reassigned as a military liaison to the South American Military where he traveled extensively in the service to his country. After retiring from the military, he spoke at many Memorial Day services at churches throughout the community and also acted as a translator for schools, churches and other venues. Mr. Whaley retired from Stroh Brewing Company after 20 years of service. He was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church for 40 years, serving in several capacities and was awarded Lay Person of the Year for the year 2000. Mr. Whaley was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed offshore fishing, clamming, camping and anything else that involved being with his family. Mr. Whaley was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty. He is survived by three sons, Tom, Ronald and John (wife, Ann); grandchildren, Jamie, Christy, John, Heather, and Gabriel; and greatgrandchildren, Alexia Grace and James Tymothy. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel on Monday, March 9th , 2009, from 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 10th, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastors Ellis Rouse, Phil Bauguess and John Whaley presiding.
