KERNERSVILLE-James Edwin Swaim, Sr., 87 a devoted father, selfless commitment to his family, church, community and country, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2010 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 21, 1923 in Forsyth Co. to the late James Lawson and Mattie Newell Swaim. Mr. Swaim was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church and a WWII Army Veteran with the 737 tank Battalion Company C having served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He also was a firefighter with the Beeson Crossroad Fire Dept. and later served on the board of directors, and after 35 years of service he retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Hastings Swaim of the home; two sons, James Edwin Swaim, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC, Stanley Gray Swaim of Kernersville; 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church with Rev. Patricia Lewis, Rev. Ellis Rouse and Rev. Phil Bauguess officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. Mr. Swaim will lay in state from 1-1:45 pm prior to the service in the church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the Swaim family. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, 794 Sedge Garden Rd., Kernersville, NC 27284.
