James Jim Walter Steelman, Sr.

Winston Salem-James ""Jim"" Walter Steelman, Sr., 92 passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010. He was born September 5, 1918 in Roanoke, VA to the late James Dalton and Carrie Holder Steelman. Mr. Steelman was of the Moravian Faith. James was with the Winston Salem National Guard until his platoon was activated into the 132nd Quartermaster Company of the United States Army during WWII. He served in the Pacific Theater and had received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Star. While enlisted in the army, he served as a Technical Sergeant of the Yellow Ball Express Trucking Co. James served his country for over 6 years. During his life he worked in the service department of several major dealerships in and around the Winston Salem area and retired from Colony Dodge. James was also owner operator of Jim Steelman's Auto Service on Vargrave St. in Winston Salem, where he will be remembered for his exceptional work on all automobiles especially Volvo's. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Hedgecock Steelman; four sisters and two brothers. Surviving are his son, James Walter Steelman, Jr. and wife, Shelby of Winston Salem; his daughter, Jane Steelman Burton of Kernersville; two grandsons, Kenny Steelman and girlfriend, Robyn Nemeh, and Timmy Steelman and wife, Carrie all of Winston Salem; four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Taylor, Jacey, and Brady; and many nieces, nephews and friends. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday, December 31, 2010 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel with Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 pm Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Charles Record and Dr. Curtis Pearcy, along with Hospice of Winston Salem for their devoted care.
