James Hampton Sprinkle

Mr. James Hampton Sprinkle, 82, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday morning, March 27, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Sprinkle was born in Surry County on April 24, 1927 to James Hampton and Minnie M. Hines Sprinkle. He retired from AT&T Technologies in 1988, after 36 years of service. Mr. Sprinkle was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from July 1945 to February 1947, then served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1949, at which time he returned to the active U.S Army. He served time in the occupation of Germany and was a veteran of the Korean War. James Sprinkle did not know a stranger. He was a friend to many. His example for Christ will live on in the hearts of his family and friends who found him instrumental in so many ways. In 2000, James Sprinkle was named the ""Living Legend"" and was awarded for his success. He scored the first ""touch-down"" in Bowman Gray Stadium. He was better known as ""Catfish"", and was an All-Star baseball, football, and basketball champion. He had the all-time record, one-handed 206 free throw shots in a row, which to our knowledge remains undefeated. He had a passion for horse-shoe pitching and numerous other sports. James Sprinkle was raised in the Children's Home on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem from age 2. Growing up without a mother and father did not defeat him in his walk of life and the examples he set for others. He believed discipline was necesssary in all steps of life. Mr. Sprinkle is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Porter Lewis Sprinkle; and a brother-in-law, Buck Boone. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Nell Colene Spry Sprinkle; a son, Mitchell H. Sprinkle and wife Judy; a daughter Susan Helene Todd and husband Michael; two granddaughters, Mary Katherine Hackett and husband Shawn, and Morgan Riley Prince and husband, Bradley; a step grandson, Jonathan M. Todd and wife Brandy; two special great-grandchildren Lane Jacob Prince and Kassidy Jade Hackett; two sisters, Anna Lee Boone and Maxine Jones; and a brother Frank Jones. The funeral service will be conducted 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Hiatt Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Perry, Pastor Charlie Martin, and Pastor Thomas Todd officiating. A military graveside service will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday evening at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
