James Calvin Smith

James Calvin Smith, 86, passed away December 31, 2009. Mr. Smith was born March 18, 1923 in Chattanooga, TN. He was the eldest child of the late William and Della Smith. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Smith and a sister, Catherine Butner. Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife, Beth Smith; a daughter, Margaret Davis and husband Andy of Winston-Salem; three sons, B.J. Smith and wife Thuy of Lewisville, Tim Smith of Winston-Salem, and Stan Smith and wife Beatriz of Lexington; a sister, Dot Mauney of Cary; two brothers, Roy Lee ""Pete"" Smith and wife Vi of Winston-Salem and Franklin Smith and wife Geri of Tampa, FL. One of Mr. Smith's greatest accomplishments was his service to his country. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in January 1942 through 1965, serving in WWII and Korea. After retiring from the Air Force, he opened coin operated laundries throughout the city of Winston-Salem. He sold his business to have more time to enjoy his grandchildren whom he adored. His grandchildren are Captain James Chris Smith, fighter pilot with the United States Marine Corps in San Diego, and his wife Sarah, Joshua Davis of Winston-Salem, and Brian Smith of Raleigh and his precious girls Maggie Davis, and Annie and Nikki Smith. After his family and country, Mr. Smith's other passions were golf and gardening. Mr. Smith taught many of ""life lessons"" to his children and grandchildren. One lesson that always stood out was God first, work hard, persistence and smart decisions would lead to a successful life. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Dr.. Mike Simpson officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30pm until 7:30pm Saturday at the funeral home. The Smith family would like to thank the staff at Clare Bridge and hospice for the care and support to our dad during his final days.
