KERNERSVILLE - Mr. James Franklin Smith, 81, died Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at his home. Jim was born on December 17, 1931 in Stokes County to the late Frederick Oliver and Nanny Mae Lankford Smith. He retired after 20 years from the US AirForce and then worked as Fleet Coordinator for Forsyth County for over 30 years. Jim enjoyed golf but especially loved working in his garden and yard. He was a fan of all sports and loved his canine companion, Joy. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his two sisters,Reva Sledge and Virginia Coggins. Surviving are his wife, Laura Smith, of the home; one daughter, Carolyn (Gerry) Brooks; two grandchildren, Lauree (Richard) Hayden and Julian (Tanya) Shores; six great grandchildren, Salem and Madison Bush, Caleb and Joshua Hayden, Montanna and Noah Shores;; two sisters, Lelia Tuttle and Faye Smith, and a special friend and neighbor, Eddie Taylor. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2013, at Kernersville Moravian Church with Rev. Don Winters and Rev. Ray Mims officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 1:45 p.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family. Memorials may be made to Kernersville Moravian Church, 504 South Main Street, Kernersville, NC 27284.
