KERNERSVILLE- James ""Smitty"" Thomas Smith, 78, a godly man, loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014.
He was born February 4, 1936 in Forsyth Co. to the late Quannah Lee and Della Ingram Smith.
Smitty was a devoted member of Kernersville Wesleyan Church; his heart for servanthood was witnessed in many capacities in the church and truly loved every minute of his ministry. He retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after many years of service and then co-owned and operated Southern Pride Car Wash in Kernersville with his son Jeffrey. He then came on board with Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel as a funeral assistant. Smitty's life and the love for his Savior spoke volumes to everyone that knew him. He exemplified the truest faith and trust in the Lord and will be greatly missed by all.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his; sister, Barbara Zimmerman; and brother, Wayne L. Smith.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Peggy Watson Smith who he referred to affectionately as ""Mom""; his children, Jeffrey (Pattie) Smith, Frankye (David) Jones, Rodney (Sherri) Smith, Sherry (Phillip) Crews, Amy Smith and Jenny Wilmoth; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Johnny Moser; brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Carroll Smith.
A Celebration of Smitty's life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Kernersville Wesleyan Church with Rev. Phil Hulen officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers Smitty requested that memorials be made to Kernersville Wesleyan Church Community Outreach Events, 930 North Main Street, Kernersville, NC 27284.
