Mr. James ""Jim"" Garland Smith, 62, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born January 3, 1954 in Wake County to the late Helen Gray McBane Smith and Vance Garland Smith. Jim worked with R. J. Reynolds for 36 years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School and was active with committee work. He was a life-long runner from high school until his health no longer permitted. Jim enjoyed the outdoors and had a great appreciation for nature. His dry wit and humor will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his older brother, Vance McBane Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Ann Martin Smith; two sons, Preston Smith (Greta) of Pleasant Garden and Keenan Smith of Boone; two grandchildren, Murdoch and Ollie Smith; three siblings: Carolyn Gravitt (Steve), Barbara Moore (Tim), and Allison Neese (Randy); one aunt, Nanny McBane; four special cousins: Wendy, Cathy, Libby, and Al; many nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family including his work and church families. A memorial service will be conducted 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Trinity United Methodist Church in King, NC with the Rev. Dr. Bart Milleson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Trinity United Methodist Church, Maintenance Fund, 725 W. Dalton Road, King, NC 27021 or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Paschold, nurses Paula Norman and Brenda Mickey, Dr. Powderly, the ICC Unit at FMC, and the 8th floor Pulmonary Unit at FMC.
