James 'Jim' Edward Shepherd, Jr.

WINSTON-SALEM-Mr. James Edward Shepherd, Jr., 75, better known as J.E., D, Gran-D, Jim, and DaChief, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. His family called him by his initials. J.E. was born on June 28, 1937 in Forsyth County and grew up in Lewisville, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Shepherd and Florence Dull Shepherd and a sister, Frances Shepherd Spainhour. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rebecca Jean McKaughn Shepherd (Becky); ""D"" is also survived by two daughters, Karen Wall and husband Steve of Stokesdale, NC and Allison Bradley and husband Morgan of Lakeland, FL; two grandsons, Ryan and Alex Wall who called him ""Gran-D""; one sister, Deanna Grant and husband David of Morehead City, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim graduated from NCSU with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering and he worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 30 years. He excelled at his work and was able to retire at the age of 52. He made lifelong friends while working in Winston-Salem. He also served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and helped develop the LARC vehicle. Becky and J.E. spent their winters in Winston-Salem and summers at Hound Ears Club in Blowing Rock, NC. Friends at their summer home called him Jim or DaChief. Leadership came naturally to DaChief in work and play. He enjoyed playing golf, hiking, playing poker, traveling, building spreadsheets, reading, and listening to music. He was an intelligent, caring, and fair man who never hesitated to help others. J.E., Gran-D, Jim, & DaChief lived a full life, left behind proud loved ones who find comfort that ""Love endures Forever."" The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Hound Ears Club in late Spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Kate B.
