James Leary ""Jim"" Payne, 73, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Payne was born Feb. 5, 1935 in Forsyth County to the late Rober Earl Payne and the late Cora Love Frazier Payne. Mr. Payne was employed at Western Electric/AT&T for 17 years and a few years with Consultants and Designers at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was known for his love of sports playing high school football, a stint at semi-pro basketball and several City ball leagues. He officiated football games at the high school and college levels for many years. With sports being so dear to him his employment transitioned to the City Recreation Department from which he retired. After retirement he worked events at the Coliseum, Groves Stadium, Ernie Shore Field and the Fairgrounds until his death. He is survived by his daughters, Jeana Douros and Sheri Leigh Payne; son-in-law, John Douros, all of Winston-Salem; sister, Willie Mae Ellis of Winston-Salem; brother, Robert Bennett Payne; sister-in-law, Wilma Payne of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie Earl Payne, and a sister, Doris Payne. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, Dec. 20 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Bob McCaskill officiating. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
