James Roy Nicholas

Mr. James Roy Nicholas, 94, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on February 25, 2017. He was born near Hampton Court in the UK and retired as Chairman and Chief Executive of Royal Insurance, a position he held for ten years. His business and civic activities included Director of Royal Insurance PLC and The Liverpool, London & Globe both located in the United Kingdom. In the US, Chairman of The Insurance Services Office, the Underwriters Salvage Company and as Director or Trustee of the following organizations: Underwriters Laboratories, Chemical Bank Advisory Board, American Insurance Institute, Lower Manhattan Association, Beckman Downtown Hospital, Pace University and The College of Insurance. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1940, serving mostly in Africa, Malta and the Middle East attaining the rank of Squadron Commander. He left the Air Force in 1948 to join the Royal Insurance in New York, where he met his wife Westray, who preceded him in death in 2007. He is survived by his son, Stacy and his daughter in law Kathy, who live in California. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family of Mr. Nicholas.
