Mr. James Robert McDonnell, 81, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, October 22, 2011 at his home. Mr. McDonnell was born in Parkersburg, WV to John Edward and Alma Roberts McDonnell on August 1, 1930. He graduated in 1958 from William and Mary College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics. Mr. McDonnell was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Elks of Winston-Salem. Mr. McDonnell loved playing bridge and was a lifetime member and Master Duplex Bridge Player. After retiring from the Paint Industry in 1993, he spent his time playing golf and fishing. He especially enjoyed his saltwater fishing trips with his family. Mr. McDonnell was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Eunice B. McDonnell; a son, Mark McDonnell of Jamestown, NY; two daughters, Kathy Felix and husband John of Gettysburg, PA, and Trish Simpson and husband Tim of Kingsland, GA; four grandchildren, William, Shannon, James and Matthew; four great-grandchildren, Aiden, Constance, Jacilyn, and Hailey; a brother, John McDonnell of TX; and a sister, Kitty Smith of AZ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Brian Cook and the Rev. Michael Buttner officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
