James Lephoe Longworth passed away early Saturday morning, June 12, 2010 at the age of 90, at his home in Charlotte following a prolonged illness. He was born in Forsyth County, North Carolina on March 10, 1920 to Fannie Evans Longworth and Charles E. Longworth. James spent most of his life in Winston-Salem, where he worked at Western Electric Company for 35 years, primarily in the Art and Technical Publications departments. He also produced and performed in a number of Western Electric's ""WENOCA Follies"" stage shows which benefitted charities, and showcased local talent. He served a myriad of community organizations, including as a volunteer, then Board member for Crisis Control Ministries, and as a volunteer at Baptist Hospital. He was also a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts, and served on the advisory committee for Forsyth Domiciliary Homes Community organization. James was active in politics for most of his life, serving as Dwight Eisenhower's fifth district campaign manager in 1952, President of the Young Republicans, and a term as Chairman of the Forsyth Republican Party. Mr. Longworth had been a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem since 1959, where he served as a lay reader, performed in the annual Feast of Lights, and taught Christian education to several generations of young people. James was an accomplished painter, sculptor, and cartoonist whose works brought joy to friends and neighbors. He was also known for producing award-winning roses, and for his thought provoking letters to the Editor of the Winston-Salem Journal. Mr. Longworth was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Margaret, Inez, Mildred, Elizabeth, Edmund, Harold, and Richard. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Charlotte Arnold Longworth; a daughter Linda Couch (Charles) of Charlotte, and a son, James L. Longworth, Jr.(Pam) of Kernersville; and by four grandchildren: Trip Couch (Tiffany) of Sugarland TX; Kimberly Hanson (Greg) of Charlotte; Kevin Couch (Holly) of Provo, Utah; and, Ashley Couch (Susie) of Mesa, AZ; and by several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister in-laws Peggy Arnold and Doris Creedmore, as well as six nieces: Faye Kimball , Judy Walker, Dawn Kouba, Kathy Nyerges, Marsha Skouris, Angela Arnold, and one nephew, Robert Arnold. The funeral will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem. The family will receive guests at a reception in the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Longworth asks that donations be made to the Children's Christian Education department at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
