James D. Lewis, Jr.

Mr. James D. Lewis, Jr. went to be with his Lord on Saturday evening, December 13, 2008. He was born on November 11, 1926 in Walkertown to his late parents, James Dewey Lewis and Sudie Southern Lewis. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Lewis Mitchell and an infant baby brother as well as his recently departed wife of 62 years and childhood sweetheart, Sara Fritz Lewis. He was a sweet, kind, gentle, generous and appreciative man to all who knew him and a loving, devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by his sons, Michael Edward Lewis of Winston-Salem, Stephen Gray Lewis of New York City, and daughter, Sonja Lewis Glass of Winston-Salem, as well as his 4 grandchildren, Andrew William Glass, Christopher Michael Lewis, James Morton Lewis and Lauren Christine Lewis, nephew and wife George and Nancy Mitchell, and dear family friends, Marlene Jones and Marshall Burrows. Mr. Lewis proudly served his country in the Armored Division of the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1945 to 1947. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1950 with a Bachelors of Science in Commerce and retired as a management employee from AT&T after 35 years of service. He was a faithful servant to the Lord and served his churches in various ways such as a Deacon, Elder and Trustee in the Baptist, Methodist, and Moravian Churches. He also sang joyfully in the church choirs. Mr. Lewis was a Past Master in the Walnut Cove Masonic Lodge #629 AF&AM, as well as a Past Worthy Patron in the Walnut Cove Chapter of the Eastern Star. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00PM Thursday, December 18, 2008 at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Garner and the Rev. Gary Mahathey officiating. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM until 8:00PM Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family wishes to thank the excellent and caring staff in the Palliative Care Unit of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, his pastors, the Rev. Ron Garner and the Rev. Dr. Earl Wilson, and a special thanks to Drs. Hal Atkinson and Heidi Klepin.
