James "Jimmy" Edward Young

James Edward Young, 81, of Winston-Salem, a cherished uncle affectionately known as Jimmy, passed away peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Saturday, January 18, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born May 8, 1943, in Winston Salem, the son of the late Phillip Edward and Elizabeth Griffith Young. Jimmy's early years were spent at the family farm in Clemmons, and later the family would move to the Ardmore neighborhood in Winston-Salem where he attended Ardmore Elementary and RJ Reynolds High School, graduating in 1961. He served in the Army between 1965-67 and continued his service with the army reserves until 1971. Afterward, he ran a Union 76 service station with his father, but his most cherished role was being a caregiver to his grandmothers and mother.

Jimmy was a devoted caregiver who loved his family and spent many hours over the years caring for them, their homes, and their yards. He was a thoughtful uncle and always had time to run his niece and nephew to putt-putt, the movies, or just to the store for a treat. Jimmy built and collected model cars and trucks, and throughout his life he enjoyed reading about history and biographical figures. He was an avid watcher of sports, especially New York Yankees baseball and PGA golf.

He was the family encyclopedia, and the phrase; “Jimmy do you remember the name or place?” was often said, and of course he would think for a moment and then supply the answer. Jimmy was a very quiet and soft-spoken person, but when he spoke, he always had something interesting to say and he was always willing to listen.

Jimmy is survived by his loving sister, Jane Morris; his niece, Michelle Cohen and husband Evan; his nephew, Matthew Morris and wife Charlet; and grandniece, Katelyn.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

The family would like to thank the staff at Trellis Supportive Care, especially their chaplain, Rennie Adcock, for their devoted care.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
