Mr. James ""Jim"" Allen Helms, 71, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center. Jim was born in Union County on May 3, 1945. He graduated from Monroe High School, class of 1963. A U.S. Army Veteran, he served in the Special Forces with three tours in the Vietnam conflict. Among being an entrepreneur, Medic in the military, and Highway Patrolman, his greatest accomplishment was his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather; who used his gifts and talents to serve others. While reminiscing on their time at New Hope Moravian Church, his wife fondly refers to him as her ""partner in ministry"", through which she gained strength and support in carrying out her duties as an Ordained Minister. Surviving are his loving wife of 39 years, Rev. Betty Helms; three sons, Jimmy Helms (Kerri), Jeff Helms, and Marc Helms (Kelly); two grandchildren, Makayla Helms and Hailey Mae Helms; mother-in-law, Margaret Alexander; special friends and his classmates of Monroe High School class of 1963; beloved dogs, Max, Molly, and Cooper; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Friedberg Moravian Church, 2178 Friedberg Church Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27127, with Rev. Jimmy Newsome and Rt. Rev. Lane Sapp officiating. Interment will follow at the church graveyard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
