James A. 'Jim' Hedgepeth

James A. ""Jim"" Hedgepeth, 87, of Winston-Salem passed away on Friday, December 16, 2011. He was a resident of Heritage Woods Retirement Home since 2006. Jim was born in Marlboro County, South Carolina on December 17, 1923 to the late Daniel James and Donnie Jane Stubbs Hedgepeth. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Robert ""Bobby"" of Society Hill, SC, and a sister, Vera Hedgepeth Bridgers of Rowland. Most of his adult life was spent in Winston-Salem. In 1950, he established Hedgepeth Dry Cleaners and Laundry, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1980. Jim served as a director for 10 years and as a vice president for 3 years of the Central Division of the North Carolina Association of Launderers and Cleaners. He was a charter member of the Sedge Garden Civic Club, Sedge Garden Lion's Club, Sedge Garden Community Center and Triangle Fire Department, which was the first Volunteer Fire Department in Forsyth County. He served as its Board Chairman for many years. For 12 years, Jim was Registrar of the Broadbay I Voting Precinct. Jim was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church for 51 years, where in 1950, he was ordained as a Deacon. He served in many leadership capacities throughout his faithful years of membership. Since 2006, he has been a member of Ardmore Baptist Church. Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie Smith Hedgepeth, a daughter, Faye Hedgepeth Price and son-in-law, Jerry W. Price, of Tarboro, granddaughters, Sara Frances Price of Raleigh and Ellen Price Lewis and husband, Hunter, of Brooklyn, NY and great granddaughter, Frances Hunter Lewis. A memorial service will be 2:00 PM Monday, December 26, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel officiated by the Rev. Dr. Jill Crainshaw and Rev. Paul Riggs. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rescue Mission, 717 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101, Salvation Army, 130-A Stratford Ct., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to the charity of choice.
