Born in Rocky Mount, NC on July 16, 1942, to R. Taswell Griffin Jr. and Fidelia Overton Griffin, he was raised the ninth of ten children on a dairy farm. He attended Benvenue Elementary and High Schools, graduating from Oak Ridge Military Academy in 1960. Jimmy was of the Baptist faith, serving as an ordained deacon at New Friendship Baptist Church through the 1970's and 1980's.
