James Bernard Gilchrist

Kernersville - James Bernard Gilchrist, 90, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 24, 1918 in Edgefield Co., South Carolina to the late William Robert Gilchrist and Sara Elizabeth McCord Mr. Gilchrist was a member of First Baptist Church in Kernersville since 1965. He was a United States Navy Veteran who served in the Pacific during WWII and retired from Roadway Express after 24 years of employment. James was an avid gardener and he coached the Jaycees for 14 years at Kernersville Little League. also Surviving are; his loving wife Mary Frances Southern Gilchrist; five children, Claudeen Murrow and husband Duncan of Morganton, Robbie Gilchrist and wife Gina of High Point, John Gilchrist and wife Sandi of Atlanta, William Gilchrist and wife Sandy of Oak Ridge, and Bernie Gilchrist of Asheville; four grandchildren, Mandi, Ehren, Megan, and Quinton; one great- grandchild, Evan English; and three sisters, Millie, Rae, and Marie; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Kernersville with Dr. Stephen Martin, and the Rev. Karen Kurntz officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Transportation Handyman Team, 401 Oakhurst St., Kernersville, NC 27284 or the Shepherd's Center of Kernersville, Inc., 431 Bodenhamer St., Kernersville, NC 27284. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
