Mr. James Robert Gentry, 91, peacefully entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, on December 2, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. James was born in Jonesville, NC, on October 13, 1931, the son of the late Arvil Gentry and Alva Shaffner Gentry. He was a charter member of Freedom Baptist Church and loved his church family very much. James loved to hunt, fish, camp and travel with friends and church family. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who will be missed deeply by all who knew him. James proudly served our country in The United States Army during the Korean War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazeline Carter Gentry; four sisters, Loretta Binkley, Clara Tuttle, Mary Lou Edwards, and Laura Beamer; and one brother, Billy Joe Gentry. James is survived by his daughter, Lisa Hopkins (Harold) of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Hal David Hopkins (Ellen) of Winston-Salem, Daniel Hopkins (Jamie)of Kernersville, and Heather Watson (Brandon) of Germanton; five great-grandchildren, Chloe, Carter, Grayson, Hadley, and Carson; two brothers, Evon Gentry (Dale) of Winston-Salem and George Gentry (Gerri) of Pfafftown; a special girlfriend of 11 years, Martha Collins; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 5, 2022, at Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall with Pastor Jon White and Rev. John T. Byerly officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7:00–9:00 Sunday night at Freedom Baptist Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Trellis Supportive Care (Stokes Co.) and longtime family friend, Mrs. Frances Phoenix, for the love and support during his time of need. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trellis Supportive Care or Freedom Baptist Church Youth Group.
