James Wilson Dunn

Mr. James Wilson Dunn (affectionately known as ""Pappy""), 96, of Clemmons died at home Tuesday, September 8, 2009. He was born January 14, 1913, the son of William John and Flora Transou Dunn. He is survived by children, Peggy Dunn Chappell, Mike Dunn (Dale), Steven Dunn (Bo), Ella Dee Dunn Edwards (John); son-in-law, Jim Gould; stepdaughters, Rosemary Morris (Don), and Amie Hampton (Worth); grandchildren, Rodney Chappell, Jon Chappell, Peter Chappell, Mandy Reed, Michael Dunn, Matthew Dunn, Mary Ella Hanson, Sarah Minnich, Leah Buterbaugh; four step-grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; nine step-great grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Watkins. Preceding him in death was his first wife, Ella Lashmit Dunn; second wife, Ruth Carpenter Dunn; daughter, Angela Dunn Gould; son-in-law, Thurmond Chappell; granddaughter, DeLane Chappell Schumacher; great grandson, Eric Schumacher; brothers, Ralph, Frank, and Jack Dunn; sisters, Ethel Reid, Juanita Brown, and Lucille Henderson. During WWII, Mr. Dunn served his country through his employment at Hercules Powder Co. and Firestone Rubber Co. Being a third generation horticulturist, he operated a landscape/site development company for 30 years. He was a charter member of the Clemmons Volunteer Fire Department, past president of the Clemmons Civic Club, a former member of the Clemmons School Board, member of The Gideon's West Camp, and a 32nd degree Mason. Many will remember him as Pappy Dunn, the beloved school bus driver, as well as a horse lover, and passionate member of the Clemmons Kitchen coffee club. A devoted member of Fraternity Church of the Brethren, he enjoyed his past services as head usher and greeter. Pappy will fondly be remembered for his faith, love of family, hard work ethic, his generosity and gregarious personality. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel Thursday evening September 10th, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at Fraternity Church of the Brethren, Friday, September 11th, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
